Benefit for Virgil and Laura Churchill
The Benefit for Virgil and Laura Churchill is for the purpose of assisting their recovery after the devastating loss of their home, possessions and cat due to a house fire and foreclosure.
I chose the Phoenix picture for the cover because of the legend: The Phoenix is a supernatural creature, living for 1000 years. Once that time is over, it builds its own funeral pyre, and throws itself into the flames. As it dies, it is reborn anew, and rises from the ashes.
It's a story of hope and rebirth which I think Laura and Virg need right now.
More of the story:
Written by Hope Baier - During the early morning hours of September 11th, The Churchill family watched their White Bear Lake home of 6 years, burn down.
The family was sleeping when Virgil Churchill awoke to a smell. He opened his bedroom door, to find the entire kitchen engulfed in flames. He woke his wife Laura, and immediately went to his children's room, grabbing Roland (6) in one arm and Stella (4) in the other. Although there was no available path to the back door of the home, the family was able to quickly exit through a front door. Once the family was out safe, Virgil re-entered the home to recover his cell phone, in order to call 911. “Virgil is our hero, and I am so thankful he got us all out”, says Laura. Their cat was in the bedroom when they ran out and Virgil cut open the screen and tried to get her out, but it was too late, she didn't make it out.
White Bear Lake Fire Department arrived on the scene, just after midnight on September 11th. High winds enraged the flames, and worked against efforts to contain the fire. Mahtomedi and Vadnais Heights Fire Departments also arrived to assist White Bear Fire. A total of 29 fire fighters were present, working hard to contain the fire until approximately 4am.
Virgil a sheet metal worker by trade, has spent a lot of time over the last four years, laid off. Due to the lack of income, the Churchill's became behind on their mortgage; despite their efforts of cashing in retirement funds and draining their savings accounts to catch up on their mortgage, the home went into foreclosure. Therefore, they had no homeowners insurance to assist in any recovery of personal items, or their home. The home has been considered a total loss.
Family and friends are currently organizing a benefit for the family, to assist in their process of recovery. More info can be found at http://www.facebook.com/BenefitForVirgilLauraChurchill
